Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 2 Virtual Open & Passenger service will commence on 28 August 2021
In the lead-up to the opening of Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 2 (TEL2) for passenger service, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be organising a series of Open House activities from 23 to 27 August 2021. Due to the evolving COVID-19 situation, the TEL2 Open House activities will be conducted virtually.
Join us online and be part of the TEL2 community
1) Members of the public can look forward to the following activities during the TEL2 virtual Open House:
a) Travel on a journey along TEL2 and learn about the unique station architecture and features, civil defence shelters, as well as uncover interesting sights and sounds around the stations;
b)Hear behind-the-scenes stories from our engineers on the challenges faced during the construction of TEL2 and how they overcame these hurdles;
c) Learn nifty craft skills such as building your very own TEL train set via our online workshops;
d) Take part in exciting contests and win prizes; and
e) Join LTA’s Facebook “Live” sessions for an hour of fun, laughter and entertaining games with attractive prizes to be won. During the Facebook “Live” sessions, members of the public can familiarise themselves with the new stations, learn more about what it took to bring these stations to completion, and win newly launched Knackstop merchandise.

Connecting to more places with public transport
3) With the opening of TEL2, 100,000 households will be within a 10-minute walk from a TEL station. This includes residents in the Thomson area who were previously not served directly by a rail line. With the new Caldecott station being an interchange with the Circle Line, the increased rail connectivity is an incentive for motorists to try out the new TEL2 and experience the convenience of traveling by public transport.
4) Commuters will also enjoy shorter journeys with TEL2. For example, a Sin Ming resident travelling to Republic Polytechnic will have his journey time halved, from the current 50 minutes via bus and train to 25 minutes by TEL. Similarly, a resident staying in the Mayflower area will be able to get to Jurong East in 40 minutes by train, as compared to 60 minutes via bus and train today.
5) With more stages of TEL opening in the coming years, residents living along the TEL corridor will have a faster and more direct option to travel towards the city centre via the train.
6) The 43km TEL is Singapore’s sixth MRT line, adding 32 new stations to the existing rail network, eight of which are interchange stations. When fully operational, TEL is expected to serve approximately 500,000 commuters daily in the initial years, and this will increase to about one million commuters in the longer term.
7) Besides enhancing connectivity between the northern, central, and eastern parts of Singapore, TEL will strengthen the resilience of our rail network by providing alternative travel routes for commuters on other lines. As TEL runs parallel to the North-South Line (NSL), it will also help to reduce reliance and commuter load on NSL.
